ABOUT US
Purpose.
The Berhe Group is dedicated to supporting the Department of Social Services in their mission to help young males acquire the skills, knowledge, and self-reliance necessary for personal growth and successful family functioning. To achieve this, we focus on various key areas.
We provide access to mental health professionals who offer individual, group, and family therapy, helping residents navigate challenges, build resilience, and develop healthy coping strategies. In addition, we collaborate with local schools and vocational programs to ensure our residents receive the academic and career support they need to succeed in the long term.
Recognizing the importance of life skills development, our curriculum covers essential skills such as decision-making, problem-solving, communication, and self-care, fostering personal maturity and independence. We actively involve families in the treatment process, providing resources and support to help them better understand and address their child's needs.
Furthermore, we encourage our residents to participate in community service projects and social activities, fostering a sense of belonging and responsibility to their community. Finally, we regularly evaluate and update our programs, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of best practices and deliver the highest quality care to our residents.
By focusing on these key areas, The Berhe Group is committed to helping young males overcome adversity and build a strong foundation for personal and family success.
History.
Founded by Judy Berhe and Berhe Asfaha in October 1989, The Berhe Group has a rich history of providing compassionate care and support to emotionally troubled male youth and Non-Minor Dependents. Drawing from their diverse backgrounds and a shared passion for helping others, Judy and Berhe worked tirelessly to establish a non-profit organization that would make a lasting difference in the lives of those it served.
In its early years, The Berhe Group focused on creating a strong foundation for its programs, forming strategic partnerships with local schools, mental health professionals, and community organizations. Through these collaborations, the organization was able to offer a wide range of services, including therapeutic counseling, academic support, and life skills training.
Over the years, The Berhe Group has expanded its reach and impact, serving a growing number of residents in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. The organization has also evolved its services to address the changing needs of its residents, incorporating trauma-informed care and culturally competent practices.
Today, The Berhe Group remains committed to the values and principles established by its founders more than three decades ago. By constantly seeking innovative ways to support the personal growth and family functioning of its residents, The Berhe Group continues to build on its rich legacy, making a meaningful difference in the lives of countless young males and their families.
As we look to the future, The Berhe Group is dedicated to remaining a leader in residential treatment, constantly adapting to the needs of our residents and maintaining our founders' vision of transforming lives through care, compassion, and unwavering support.
Systemic Approach.
The systematic approaches referred to above will all encompass the use of both a point system for children and life experience for the Non-Minor Dependents. The point system includes four different levels. The children are awarded points for appropriate behavior and/or interactions. However, inappropriate behavior will result in a loss of points and privileges.
In addition, each child will be encouraged to learn and use social skills. The term “social skills” implies the life tools needed to successfully survive in society. These skills will be taught through role playing and modeling. Additional points will be given for each learned and used skill.
In summary, BERHE will provide each resident with an opportunity to grow in an environment, which is stable, consistent, predictable, safe, loving, caring, and nurturing while providing guidance, correction, and modification of socially inappropriate behavior.
